How Can I Install Word 2007 In Ubuntu 8.04?

Asked by taurus

OpenOffice sucks, so I want to install Word and Excel 2007 in ubuntu 8.04. 2 questions:

1) Is it possible to ONLY install the .exe files? All I need are just the apps, not the entire Office suite. If so, how?

2) Wil this take up alot of space on my hard drive?

3) Will I be able to print from it in ubuntu?

.

1) Nope. Even in windows you have to install the .ddl files and crap.
2) Same as it would in windows.

The only way to install would be if it works with wine and given that's quite new it probably doesn't but you would have to check the wine db to be sure or just try. Or you could set up windows in a vm but that would be overkill and would take up much more space than just using it in wine.

Most people use Ubuntu to get away from ms. If you don't like OO.o then try Google Docs (unless you need macros and other higher level features).

I am not sure as to the installation requirements, I assume that you would want a full install, but I think you can select only the apps you are interested in with the custom install dialog. Most likely this will take up a lot of hard drive space.

There was a HOWTO for this in Ubuntu Forums.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=922963

Here is the another reference from WineHQ
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4992

Hopefully you would be able to get it working with some very good functionality.

Thanks, guys for your input. Ok, I need to know 2 things:

1) Will I be able to print from it in ubuntu?

2) Jim, you mentioned Google Docs, but I don't hink you can download it. It's a web-based platform, not a downloadable app.

Google docs is a web app which I think is the future of computing - use a low power and cheap computer to connect and then do your work on the web. I mention it as an alternative way of doing the same kind of work, not a drop in replacement for word, OO.o.

If you can install word in Ubuntu then it will print - unless there are some hangups with using it in wine. I don't use wine so I can't comment on how things integrate but in general an app that runs can print, etc.

To clarify my above reply, yes, you can install just word or excel (again assuming it works in wine) but you cannot just install the .exe. The .exe relies on lots of other files and they all needed be installed. Wine handles this for apps that it can work with.

When do you guys think the next version of OpenOffice will come out for ubuntu? I will try it out first. If the next version fails to live up to my expectations and fails as a mature word processor, I'll have to install Word.

It's already out. You can download and install the .deb from the oo.o website. Not sure how long before it hits the repos but hopefully not too long.

Thanks big jim. I think I'll wait for it before it lands in repo land. It's always been a pleasure getting your advice... later big jim!

Happy to help. If you want to install it, it's easy. I did last night and no issues at all. First remove the old version (should be able to undo this too if you change your mind)

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice.org-core

Then after you extract the download, cd to the directory and then to the "debs" dir and run

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

That will install all the files in there. The last thing is to install the menu items. For that I just opened up the "desktop integration" folder in Nautilus and double clicked the .deb in there. You could do it from the terminal too.

That's it. You now have OO.o v3
