trying to install drivers for RTL-8139

Asked by michael h

hi,

i have just installed ubuntu. When i was making the install options i chose not to use a partician but installed over my windows vista os. I can't find my os cd to reinstall. apart from that ubutu looks great and seems ok. I get some messages about things to install, when i try to do so i get error messages, i think this is because i do not have internet access.
i have used some sudo commands in the terminal and found that my hardware is
RTL - 8139/8139C/8139C+
Realtek Semiconductor CO., Ltd.
driver 8139too driverversion = 0.9.28.

later on it says:
 wireless interface

wlan0
ethernet physical wireless
wireless = IEEE 802.11g

i have tried to install ndisgtk for the hardy heron 0.8.31-i386deb. release . However i can not install it with synaptic manager. I have browsed to the desktop where i have put the file put it won't let me select it to add it to downloaded packages. it says dependancy ndiswrapper - utils 1.9 not met.
i was also thinking do i need windows running or able to run to use the windows drivers through ndisgtk?
i have found that some applications are missing from my installation. I do not have restricted device driver option in the system applications menu, also i think harware infomation is missing.

i have also tried to install rtssco-8139C_505 which i have downloaded which i think is a linux driver for my RTL 8139 wireless broardband. i get the message :
could'nt display "/media/UDISK 2.0/rtssco-8139C_503/rtsscoc_505/exe/setup".
There is no application for this file type.

I have tried to run this directly from the data stick i am using too transfer files from the internet to my laptop, and also from the synaptic manager. There the filoes show but are geryed out and i can not select them.

In the top right i select the device manager i think it is called i try to select the wireless option from the three to enable roaming but again it is greyed out.

Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Does your wired ethernet connection to the Internet work? If you connect your LAN cable to your network card and to the broadband modem, can you access the Internet using Ubuntu?

If it works, then it means that your Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ wired network card works fine.

I think that you are trying to get wireless to work, right? This means you are trying to configure your Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI wireless network card.

Please try following procedure first (for configuring wireless):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=769990

Please also send us the output of following command:

sudo lshw -C network

Regards,

Mark

Bingo!! Thanks mate this was very helpful.

I would like to report however that i ran into a few problems. The First being that i could not download URL /WLANBroadcom.tar.gz from the link provided in the post. This is an importtant file so i think this link should be updated. You can use this link if you want, www.kickbill.com/docs/WLANBroadcom.tar.gz

also i found to errors in the text: it took me ages to go into the WLANBroadcom directory, i am still not sure how i did it. It may be because i installed /cdcd. I'm a bit confused here, what with typo's etc. that may be my fault.

I managed to borrow my Dad's 'Dongle' (his words) to get connection through Wireless USB Adapter IEEE802.11g. With out this i could not have updated all of the latest updates aboutr ubuntu and followed about 50% of the instructions.

Conclusion Ubuntu looks cool but is a bitch to install. It has taken me a week of lost computer usage through may a lazy install of Ubuntu. Which has not left me with only one os and still maybe a lost Vista os, which was working fine when i think back....
Also have graphics problems such as buggy 3dchess even with the suggested drives, so i'm going to give ubuntu an 8/10 score. Plus side is definatly the speed, (about 1 minute re-boot!) And i think a connection to the internet plus lots of online support is mandatory.

Thanks for help , great site. Will use again !! :)
