download and install problem

Asked by Jeff Stahl

I just set up ubuntu migrating from windows. No problem at all with set up. So I download Limewire and the program downloads fine but halfway through the installation of the dependant programs the installation stalls(stops). No activity for over an hour I restarted the computer and tried to install again but get a message - " Only One software management tool is allowed to run at one time - Please close the other application e.g. 'Update Manager' aptitude or 'Synaptic' first. I close out and go to System\Administration\Synaptic Package Manager - When the package manager opens I then get this message - An Error occured - The following details are provided. E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. --------- ( same messages over and over) I dont understand what the Limewire hangup is and then these error messages -I am now clueless on what to do. Can anyone please help? Thanks, Jeff - My email address is Jaysteel @msn.com.

you must run command 'dpkg --configure -a' (without quotes) in terminal -- probably as user root
(for this run as sudo dpkg --configure -a)
as due to interruption in previous installation ; packages got broken

this command will clean the installation cache of packages that were broken

then you will have to restart installation of packages that you want and carry on as usual

if you are running sudo command for first time
then you have to know that-

sudo will ask for your password(if you are an administrator)

and as you type password it is not shown (not even * or a dot )
so just enter it --as it would be accepted when you press enter

Hello

To correct this problem just open Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Give your user password when requested. You will not see anything, but type it and press enter.

Then retry to update and/or to install desired package.

Thank you so much for your help on my situational problem. I did as you suggested and it “fixed the problem”. I downloaded the program I was having problems with again and I got the same “freeze” thing – but then I noticed a box for Terminal – which I then clicked on and it was asking me for my agreement acceptance before the installation proceeded I wasn’t expecting that, but I opened the box, accepted the agreement (s) and the program set up perfectly. I am quite sure your suggestion will help if I have further issues. Frankly I am sick and tired of all the exasperating experiences with Windows, lock ups, threats, viruses, crashes and I am sure you know of all the other problems which I have had, not to mention the Windows money drain Thank you so much for your prompt, timely help. I wasn’t expecting that either. Sincerely. Jeff
