After install, I am left in Live Session User mode

Asked by peppertech

I can boot from the Live CD (8.04 by the way) and everything works great.

However, if I select to install from the desktop, or even reboot and select install from the startup menu on the CD (instead of selecting to run from the CD), the installation goes all the way through the partitioning of the drive, says it's installing the system, etc. then it just returns or goes to the Live Session User desktop with the Install icon and the Examples icon on the desktop.

What am I missing? Why won't it install to my HDD?

The HDD that I'm trying to install to is a brand new Seagate 1TB SATA drive.

This might be a problem with the CD you are using. Here is some general tips regarding the CD

Download the standard Ubuntu 8.04.1 32 bits iso image, torrent is recommended
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04.1/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04.1/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

Check the md5sum of your downloaded Ubuntu .iso image file https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
and compare with http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/MD5SUMS

Burn it on a CD rom with low speed 4X and then check the md5sum of the burnt CD

Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check CD for defects" to be sure the CD is read without errors by the destination PC CD rom driver

Then reinstall your Ubuntu

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply,

The md5sum is correct and the Check CD test ran successfully.

I'm going to try and install onto a smaller partition on one of the IDE drives that is also in the machine. I've seen in other threads that there may be some issues with 8.04 and SATA drives.

The same thing is happening when I use an IDE drive as well.

It seems like it finishes the install, but just doesn't do the reboot. So, I reboot manually and the screen comes up and says "GRUB _ " with a black screen and the _ just blinking away.

Does this help jog any more ideas?

Thanks to all for taking the time to check this out and give suggestions.

Ok, I finally got things to work. Here is the solution.

-- Removed all of the IDE drives (disconnected, not really removed)
-- Ran installer from CD with only SATA drive connected
-- On the last page of the install wizard, click on Advanced and change the boot loader from the default of hd0 to sda

That allowed the installer to setup grub properly and it then prompt to reboot at the end of the installation, which it had never done before this.
