Only get to the Heron screen when loading 8.0.4 from scratch

Asked by MarkF

I am trying to load 8.0.4 on a Dell Inspiron P3 w/ 512Mb Ram. I formatted the drive, so I am loading to a clean space.

The computer recognizes the CD and loads, I get to the Heron screen but the machine never re-boots after loading and I am unable to eject the CD from the drive. No desktop icons appear or menu bar.

I downloaded the i386 .iso image (for 32-bit), and it seemed to burn fine. Have tried several times to load, but always get to the same point and stop. Let the machine sit for about an hour, no flashing of the hard drive light or the CD. Always locks up. Have to turn it off and back on to get the CD to eject.

I would suggest using the text-based Alternative install disc. The alternative disc tends to have less problems booting.

To get the alternative install disc, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and mark the check box near the bottom.

Hello

A bit more info:

I suggest you check out the download site http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso, the calculated value should be 166991d61e7c79a452b604f0d25d07f9

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

Bhavani Shankar.

I tried the alternate version, it only asks a few questions before it loads, but it still hangs during the install.

I re-downloaded the alternate version this morning. I ran it through the MD5 utility, it respods that the download is OK, but the checksum is different from what you sent me. I will try burning it at a slower spped to see if that solves the issue.

Please don't burn damage .iso image on cd you first must have same md5sum to be sure the downloaded iso image is with no error in it.

Hope this helps

Downloaded a new alternate version with Bittorrent. Worked fine, responding from my laptop running Ubuntu.
