Hi,

do you have an DSL-Router or just a DSL-Modem. Usually the DSL-Router includes a DHCP-Server which gives the Client the correct IP-Adress and Subnet-Mask.

to your Second Question:

Its no problem to run a Dual-Boot-Solution. The Ubuntu-Installer will help you to realize that. Just keep care that you provide a Partition for Ubuntu better two (one as / and one as Swap).

Hope that helps to solve your Problem
Martin

i have a DSL-modem. and i have written down my IP as well as my sub-mask jest for this case but it doesn't seem to work.... is there something i am missing.

oh and TY on the Dual-boot... do you think its best to set it up as a dual-boot to salve this problem then it is to keep it on a live-CD.

When you run a live CD all your Data will deleted when you reboot cause during a Live-Session your Data will be stored in the RAM.

When you just have a Modem: Maybe you need to Dial-In? Or does your Modem connect automaticly to you ISP?

it jest goes right in auto... jest to keep confusion off i will explain the setup.

cable goes into this DSL cable modem, which then a ethernet cable is attached from that to the PC (or sometimes my wii)

that in a nutshell is my internet wiring. this connection gives us automatic connection to the internet.

Ok, when i understand it correct your Modem has 2 Ports, one for the Connection to your ISP and one for a Client (PC, Wii...). In this case i dont understand why you have Problems with getting online with Ubuntu. Can you give some output of the following Command on Terminal:

ifconfig

Maybe its a Problem with your Network-Chipset under Linux

Hi,

can you open a Terminal: Press Alt+F2, type in xterm, an Terminal will open, type in ifconfig and post the output here.

Can you say something about your DSL-Modem, Vendor and Model?

When you press Alt+F2 a new Window will appear called Running Application, type in the Insertfield xterm and press Enter then a Terminal will open. Then just type in ifconfig and post the output here.

May be your win partition is still in place

To help you better we need some infos about your hardware so please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo fdisk -l

copy and paste result here.

-l parameter is lower of -L

Thank you
