hard drive recovery

Asked by help

I am having troubles with my hdd, and I am not able to launch windows xp anymore. I have xubuntu on a cd (can't install it on the hdd), and I have looked under Places, and there are the following options: ubuntu, trash, desktop, file system, and recent documents. I have looked through all of these, and I don't see anything that I recognize from my hdd. Is there somewhere specific that I should be looking, or do I need to make sure some option is turned on? Also, will I be able to transfer the files to an external hd if I can find the files? Thanks

Hi

You will be able to transfer the files, we'll just need to get it to look on the hard drive first. Can you do "fdisk -l" (or "sudo fdisk -l", if that doesn't work), and post the results here.

Try to get Ubuntu CD. load it.
goto Places-> My Computer.
It will show all the hard drives and get your data.
you can copy them on network or pen drive.

there wasn't a my computer option. I tried just using something else (ultimate boot cd), and it ended up doing something so I can boot windows again. I got all of the info off that I needed, so that was the main thing I was trying to do with xubuntu. It is a pretty neat OS though. As long as I can boot windows, I doubt I will be trying xubuntu again with my computer, as I don't want to do anything that may mess it up again. If my computer ends up messing up again, I will be back to try to figure this out.
