In Ubuntu 6.10 I can't Change screen resolution from 1600 x 1200

In Ubuntu 6.10 I can't Change screen resolution from 1600 x 1200 to a more usable 1280x1024 or 1024x768.
When I click on "System > Preferences > Screen Resolution" and the little window pops up it shows 1600x1200 at 76 Hz. When I click on the resolution it gives me the choices of 1280x1024 at 86 Hz; 1024x768 at 85 Hz and lower.
When I set it to 1280x1024 and click on the "Apply" button, the screen goes black for a second or so and then I'm at the log in. When I log in with Password and get back to my desktop I'm still at 1600x1200.
