problems with matroska (.mkv) playback

Asked by Ben Sykes

Hi I'm having trouble playing .mkv high def files. I started out trying to convert them to .mp4 for playing on the ps3 but run into troubles and discovered that I can't even play them back properly. I've used three players, vlc, totem and MPlayer. vlc and totem play back but only show snipits of frames, MPlayer plays audio fine but no video at all, here are the error messages:

it sounds like your computer is just too slow to play these high definition video files. it also sounds like you don't have xv support enabled, xv helps to play video files by accelerating some of the processes with your graphics chip. you might need to enable restricted drivers for your graphics chip/card to get xv support (system -> adminstration -> hardware drivers)

Thanks Gord that could be the problem, I've been reluctant to enable restricted drivers in the past because I'm using my onboard vga and the restricted drivers don't allow for the same resolution and the standard.
