How Do I Disable Checking Of CD Drive From Bootup?

Asked by taurus

I went into my bios and couldn't find the option to disable the checking of the CD drive during bootup. I want to diable the checking of the CD drive to speed up boot time. Is there a way to do this? Is it possible to disable this feature in services?

Do you mean checking for a bootable CD before it tries to boot from the hard drive? There's usually some sort of "boot order" option in the BIOS--for the fastest time, just set the hard drive to be the first boot device.

Of course, it may check the CD drive as part of its POST (Power On Self Test). You may be able to disable this in the BIOS, but I wouldn't recommend it.

In the bootup process, your BIOS will do the first things, and that can (as far as I know) only be changed within the BIOS. It then hands over to GRUB, which hands over to Ubuntu, which then loads its various services.

Thomas, thanks for replying. In my bios, I had set the hard drive as the first option to boot up and the CD ROM as the last item. All in all, there are 4 items. The other 2 I don't remember at this time, but are sandwiched between hard drive (1st) and CD OM (last).

You also mentioned that you don't recommend that I disable the checking of the bootable CD before it boots from the hard drive. I assume you mean that in case my computer crashes, I'll need the CD ROM to restore my system back. But, in case my system does crash, can't I just enable the checking of the CD ROM then by going into the bios anyway?

No, disabling that is fine--I meant something different:

When your computer first starts, it runs a number of tests to check that its components are working--it may check the CD-ROM drive (not the disk in it) as part of that. It may be possible to disable these checks, but it's probably a good idea to let them run.

Can you help with this problem?
