Any support for wifi catcher?

Is it there any project supporting the wifi catcher of the new Dell Studio and Dell XPS?

I have the wifi catcher on my laptop and don't see any need for it. Flicking the button searches for wireless networks something that is already done by gnome network manager in "realtime".
