Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Hi,
if you open an .avi file Totem should offer to install the right codec.
If this isn't the case you can use Synaptic, search for 'gstreamer' and install plugins from "bad" and "ugly" set.
e.g.
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad ##universe/libs
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg ##universe/libs

Note: the attribute bad+ugly doesn't mean the quality of the package, it's more likely a paraphrase for non OS software.

To check other Totem plugins search within Synaptic for 'totem'
e.g.
totem-gstreamer
totem-mozilla

To check if and which plugins are activated in firefox type in the url bar:
about:plugins
