i couldnt install plugin or codec in Ubuntu.

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Using System->Administration->Software sources [Ubuntu software tab] please enable (Check the checkbox) all the showed repositories rows.

after getting all the required repositories enabled

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc

To get better dvd playback first you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

Then to install:

sudo update
sudo aptitude install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

i was thought this will help me but i have ubuntu 5.1 ver

i did sudo aptitude install vlc and enter

but when i play mp3 file

msz appear

this file has no audio stream

wat i do now

The MP3 file you are testing, might be corrupt.

Try this MP3 using vlc player: http://www-eng-x.llnl.gov/documents/a_sound.mp3

I can hear the mp3 file is a piano played song Rimsky Korsakov "The fly of calabrone" using Firefox.

But may be your mp3 layer is not working so please try to open it directly with vlc:
open vlc from Applications->sound & video-> VLC media player

From VLC menu: File-> Open Network Stream -> choose: HTTP/HTTPS/....
paste the mp3 http://www-eng-x.llnl.gov/documents/a_sound.mp3
web address into field and press ok.

If all is ok now you must listen the song.
