No sound when playing games

Asked by Dines683

Hi

The thing is that i am not able to get any sound when playing games on ubuntu 8.04. The sound is working when playing mp3's or watching videos. I didn't experience this problem before updating from ubuntu 7.10.

I have an audigy 2 sound card, but when i use the system->administration-Hardware testing i do not hear a sound.

I am pretty sure that no other sound demanding applications are running when i am playing games.

When i try to list the available sound cards the following appears

gksudo asoundconf list
Please note that you are attempting to run asoundconf as a privileged superuser, which may have unintended consequences.

Names of available sound cards:
Audigy2

I think it is a little strange that it doesn't show 2 soundcards, since there should be 2-the audigy 2 and the sound card which was there when i bought the computer.

Any ideas?

From your last comment, I'm assuming that your computer came with an onboard sound card...therefore, if you haven't already, try disabling the onboard sound card from BIOS... a lot of times this fixes all sorts of problems. to do this:

hit F2, Del, or Esc to enter BIOS when your computer is initially booting up (it varies by BIOS mfg, version, etc...theres usually a prompt)

typically there will be a menu entry titled 'Onboard Devices' or 'Integrated Peripherals' in there somewhere...look in there for an entry called 'Onboard Sound' and make sure it's disabled. then reboot and re-check the sound.

the other possibility is that the sound card is being misconfigured by pulseaudio, or there may be some kind of conflict...Just try this first, and see if that does anything for you!

Hope this helps!

Don't know if this is of any importance but anyway.. in the keyboard there is an integrated volume controller, before i updated i was able to control the volume from there, but now i can't. If i try to use the controller the volume mute.

I have managed to get the volume controller in the keyboard to function. I enabled the onboard sound card and afterwards i set the Audigy 2 card as the default, but still i do not recieve any audio when playing games. Further i have experienced that when i set the onboard sound card as the default i am capable of getting sound in the games but not when trying to listen to music or watching a video.
