I appear to have a virus

Asked by Dave Brown

When I start up and attempt to log on I am prevented from doing so because as soon as the panel appears it is immediately filled with repeating forward slashes. Would you know the name of the virus and is there a fix.
Regards,
Dave Brown.

One thing I should have mentioned, I have tried reformatting but this didn't work.

I don't think you have a virus. Viruses aren't really an issue in Linux. Sounds like you have a stuck keyboard key. Do you have another keyboard to try? Or try un-sticking the spacebar key.

Hi Yeshara,
The first thing I thought of was a 'sticky' keyboard and so far have tried 4 different ones. The last one was brand new. Yes you are correct about Linux and viruses, this is one of the reasons I gave Windows the flick, especially after a 'so and so' stole my credit card details. If I don't have a virus I suppose I can try reformatting again, although it didn't solve the problem last time, unless I try loading Fedora, which I am loath to do so.

The thing is that it doesn't seem to go away after reinstalling the system. So my only advice is to lower to an earlier version of Ubuntu. (Which I suppose is 7.10, if you updated to 8.04.) There is a possibility that it's a bug in the distribution...

Even though I would find it weird, it's probably better to just try... it might work.

If you've reproduced the error that many times - file a bug report.

You might try a netinstall disc:

Maybe try an older kernel version

Can you help with this problem?
