cant open mp3 player

Asked by sick_lullaby

I'm trying to load my mp3 player's play list to take out some songs and put new ones in with Ubuntu 8.04. When i plug in my mp3 player (Sony NWZ-S615F) a USB option comes up in the Computer menu. I go and double click on the USB Drive icon but i get the message "Unable to mount location, Can't mount file."

I also have no clue what any commands are in any of the Command Prompts for linux except for addition and algebra in Python so if a fix for this issue lies within the vast realms of the command prompt... assume i know nothing about it when stating an answer ^^;

Thanks :D

I have done a little research if what i have understood, then the following is correct.

It seems that you are not the only experiencing this problem, check out this link

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/209483

It seems that there is a bug in Hardy, which according to the link above can be sumed up as follows:

"So, to sum up, in Gutsy, the player was recognized in HAL and listed as containing a volume, which was automounted. In Hardy, the player is still recognized by HAL but no volume is detected, and of course it can't get automounted.

However, it is still possible to mount /dev/sdb1 either with mount or pmount.

Sony does probably not implement mass-storage pretty accurately, giving us the messages shown in dmesg.

BUT, what we are looking for is what changed between Gutsy and Hardy that prevents volume detection in HAL."

The link also states that the volume can be mounted manually and further gives a solution to the bug

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/209483/comments/42

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask sick_lullaby for more information if necessary.
