Best advice, once you find your terminal, drag it to the desktop or the panel. I´m a Gnome user, so I have a panel, Some KDE setups I´ve seen do not.

Depending on your distro, your terminal can be under

Ubuntu is under applications > accessories> terminal.

Fedora 9 is under System > Administration> Terminal.

Gentoo is on the AWN.

Just look around for a little black TV-looking icon. Thats the terminal.

You can get a quick drop down terminal

It's a quake style terminal that appears from the top of your screen when pressing a key. (standard is F12)
Native KDE, runs under Gnome and also under KDE4.
