can these files in synaptic package manager be removed safely?

Hi all
In my SPM under status I see 2 section that may need to be cleaned up due to removal of installed or upgraded software.
1. Installed ( auto removable)
2. Installed ( local or obsolete)
all files in these two location have the green highlight
So in future if any files show up in these sections Is it safe to mark them for complete removal?

Ah my friend and great font of knowlage, ......
Installed ( auto removable)
debhelper, gettext, html2text, intltool-debian, pwgen, transcode, po-debconf... altogether 27 files

Installed ( local or obsolete)
deskbar-applet, ego, gcalctool, gdm, hal rc2.. about 52 files in this one...

I did have the software sources set to include pre-release updates ( hardy proposed) till recently... could these files have something to do with this?

No dont remove it.. after an upgrade if its marked obsolete then you can remove otherwise no since the ubuntu system depends on those packages and yes your suspicion is right marking the proposed updates would have done this

May I be permitted to ask a dumb question here, please?

In my Synaptic under "Status/Installed (auto removable)".
I find 166 packages totalling 141 MB.
It would be nice if I could remove these since my Ubuntu 9.04 is installed entirely on an 8 GB SD memory card (it works really well).

But can I autoremove those packages?
If the answer is "no" or even "maybe" then I would strongly suggest that the menu tab name be changed to something like "Installed (possibly auto removable)" but I think in that case very few would dare remove them. So, I'm afraid that confusion reigns. Also, a warning message ought to be inserted in the Help file. What is the point of having a tab called "Status/Installed (auto removable)" if in fact it is not safe to do so?

Any comments or suggestions?

I do not need pppoe in my setup as I connect via a "modem" that handles the connection for me.
can I remove it without causing problems?
