Lg opitcal drive problems

Asked by buck0182

I bought a ch20lp20 and as long as i've had it (about a week) I have yet to get it to properly read or write a disk. Ubuntu 8.04 Installed at the same time. I have tryed to burn 2 it a few times, both failed at 27% with k9copy.
When it does read a dvd it mounts properly but shows the disk as beeing blank, only the label appears.
I did get one commercial dvd to open on the drive, but it only showed 2 files in the video directory.

At one time i tryed copying to the drive and it kept asking for a Dual Layer dvd which i didn't have. It would not take a dvd-r.

My question, Is there something i'm missing here like a driver issue. Or is my optical drive dead?
My second question if i take this one back should i exchange it for another one or get a different brand all together.

My setup,
500gb sata
sony dvd-rw on IDE0 jumper to master
lg dvd-rw on IDE1 jumper to master

The sony works just fine.

Interesting problem
1st question what is a ch20lp20 I m guess the model number or something.
can you try the burner with windows say Xp?
if it works. OK I would say it is the driver , hard to say. at lest it's another test. and at the shop you want get some smart comment about using Linux. you can say you tried it with windows. when asking for a replacement.

can you try to disconnect the sony and try the LG on it own. or better still put them on the same IDE, 1set as master the other as slave. best on the IDE1. I would think.

I have a LG on my beast but a CD burner it's fine. I think my dvd rom is a LG a well.
hope this helps some

How did that pesky 40 conductor cable get in there. the lg drive works perfectly with the 80 conductor cable.

Thanks for the thoughts Neil

It was while disconnecting the sony that i noticed the cables weren't the same.
