screen resolution

I'm stuck with every thing big
Ubuntu updated and it seem to find the graphic card I have a nvidia FX 5500 128mb
I try to on the effect in appearance, it installed drivers, It said something about limited one's that could not be changed. now I have the screen at
640x480 at 50Hz which to says is not very good, I can not change them at all if I go to screen resolution in Preferences I have the choose of the above or 320x240 which is worse.
Can I please get some help to fix it.
and i think I will go back to ATI for Linux Nvidia doesn't seem to give the same support is this correct?

Check under System menu, Administration, Hardware Drivers.
You should have drivers there and enabled.

If not you can install them through Applications menu, Add/Remove and search for "nvidia"

Choose the "NVidia binary X.Org driver ('new' driver)

actually, the resolution issue is something to do with your monitor setting. You can check that your screen setting is correct by:

1. Click on System > Administrations > Screen and Graphics
2. Click on the "Model" and find your monitor Manufacturer and model.
3. If your monitor is not listed, you can add it by clicking on "Add" button below the Model list, insert your monitor driver CD and find your monitor driver file with .inf extensions (usually it is inside driver directory of your monitor driver CD).

But I have the NVidia binary X.Org driver ('new' driver)
installed that is what messed things up for me.

As for the 2nd help I don't have Screen and Graphics in admin.

you can also use this command to get the Screen and Graphics dialog:

1. Press Alt+F2
2. type in "gksudo displayconfig-gtk" (without quote marks)
3. type in your password and follow the previous instructions from number 2
