screen resolution

I'm stuck with every thing big
Ubuntu updated and it seem to find the graphic card I have a nvidia FX 5500 128mb
I try to on the effect in appearance, it installed drivers, It said something about limited one's that could not be changed. now I have the screen at
640x480 at 50Hz which to says is not very good, I can not change them at all if I go to screen resolution in Preferences I have the choose of the above or 320x240 which is worse.
Can I please get some help to fix it.
and i think I will go back to ATI for Linux Nvidia doesn't seem to give the same support is this correct?
