Live CD gives black screen with Edge 10 J190 monitor and XFX GeForce 6800GS card

Asked by Tony Pursell

I gave my step-daughter the 8-04 Live CD to use as a rescue disk (so solutions such as 'use the alternate CD' are not appropriate).

The live CD boots to a black screen and the monitor has a message saying 'Out of range...'

This is what she says about her computer:

I have 1GB of RAM. Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS, not sure
about the chipset but this is the link to the page I bought it from,
if that has the information you need:
http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=GCX-XN68GS256X

The monitor is made by Edge 10, the box says model J190, it's 19" LCD,
maximum resolution of SXGA 1280 x 1024 at a frequency of 75Hz. The
menu button brings up a box saying H sync - 48.2 KHz and V Sync -
59.8Hz, the manual says H frequency input range 30 - 80 KHz and V
frequency input range 50 - 75 Hz.

Is there any chance that we might be able to get this work for her?

75Hz is more than what is typical for a LCD monitor, 60Hz is the norm. You can attempt to use the Safe Graphics Mode from the LiveCD - it should be an option when you start boot from the CD. Since the LiveCD has limited support for monitors and graphics cards, you may need to plug in another monitor in order to run the system rescue.

My step-daughter got what she wanted to do in Safe Graphics Mode.
Here's what she said:

"The safe graphics mode worked a treat, I now have everything I need
from my old disk. Thank you so much for your help, I'm so pleased I
got everything back :)"

A small success for Ubuntu!
