Can't get downloaded fonts to work.

Asked by Patrick Henry

I downloaded some cool fonts from the internet, but they landed on my desktop. Guess I should have specified where they were to go, but I didn't know how. They don't work from the desktop.

Anyway, a friend told me the fonts wouldn't work until I drag and drop the files into the font file under usr/share/fonts/truetype. When I tried to do this, however, the program told me "Error while copying to '/usr/local/share/fonts'. You do not have permissions to write to this folder."

Please tell me where I should store downloaded fonts, and how to get permission from God to put them there.

If you want to write to that folder you will need to use su...

In a terminal type:

sudo nautilus

You should then be able to navigate to the directory where the fonts you downloaded reside (your desktop) and copy them to usr/share/fonts/truetype

Another way would to copy the fonts to "~/.fonts/", which doesn't require root permissions.

I right clicked on the icons on my desktop, and it offered me to send
them to the font file, so I did. They disappeared from the desktop, but
when I look in the font file they aren't there. They seem to have gone
into the great black cyberhole, where I'm sure they will never be seen
again. Moreover, when I look on OpenOffice the fonts I downloaded are
still not there.

So no big deal -- I can download more fonts. But would somebody please
tell me what I should do in the future when I get fonts from the
internet? What is the procedure I must follow to incorporate them into
my word processing program?

just download the fonts to your desktop (or where ever you want to) and then move them to the ~/.fonts/ directory (~ means your home directory) typically by doing

mv filename_of_the_font_goes_here ~/.fonts/

once you have navigated to the directory that you downloaded the fonts to.

Can you help with this problem?
