How do i get developing for ubuntu?

I am required to do a small project (which can be completed in abt 20 days) in my college. I am comfortable with C, C++ and new in Java2. I wish to do my project on Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest me a project and help me doing it? I have not at all developed on Linux. How do i get developing on Ubuntu?
