Pandora wont play, but youtube does.
I am new to Ubuntu, I got Youtube to play, but I cant figure out why Pandora.com wont play, or Playlist.com on Ubuntu. I installed all the streaming codecs that i thought I needed.
any Ideas?

What browser are you using? What flash plugin are you using? If you're not sure what plugin it is and you're using Firefox, try typing "about:plugins" in your navigation bar and look in there.

I don't think that your flash plugin supports Pandora. I could be wrong though.
Try this:
Go to "Applications" >> "Accessories" >> "Terminal".
Type "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-
Type in password, hit "y" and enter if it asks you any questions.
When it's done try restarting Firefox and going to Pandora and testing.

I ran that and it said that it is the newest version. I heard that pandora may not support the newest version, do you know how i can install an older one??

basically it gets to the pandora page, and same with playlist.com and hit just hangs there. It says done at the bottom of the page and says please wait while pandora loads, and i could wait for 4 hours and nothing happens.

Well the issue is that your Firefox installation isn't using the nonfree flash plugin.
So try this:
Go to "Applications" >> "Accessories" >> "Terminal".
Type in "sudo apt-get remove swfdec-mozilla flashplugin-
Type in "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-
This way hopefully we'll remove the codec that doesn't work along with the good one, then install the good one again so that it will become the active plugin in Firefox.

In this novice's humble opinion Thomas Roten's solution should be written in stone and bundled with Ubuntu. Thank you, sir.
I believe this situation crops up because when the flash plugin is first installed you're given the option of two other plugins (Gnash and something else). One assumes an open source one is better (and I believe a prompt even comes up discouraging the official plugin) so it doesn't get installed. However seeing as only the official one works, with all due respect to the open source developers, shouldn't they be booted off Synaptic until they, well, work?
If I sound like I have no idea what I'm talking about it's because I don't.

Haha, thank you.
The thing is that Ubuntu tries and will always continue to try to support open source projects rather than proprietary ones. The open source ones have come a long way in the past few years, and while they can't handle things such as pandora or many games, the swfdec plugin can handle YouTube, which is pretty significant. Ubuntu, as an open-source project that is going to stay that way, cannot recommend a proprietary piece of software. That's why there is the restricted drivers manager and that's why the other plugins pop up in that list.
Many people think that the open source plugin is still better despite the proprietary one working on the most flash movies/games.

Hi Thomas.
I had the same problem and followed your instructions above. Removing swf had no error messages but after the second command I got the following message in terminal mode:
Download done.
sha256sum mismatch install_
The Flash plugin is NOT installed.
Any recommendations?
