Software Updates Error
Hello,
It says on my top, right corner that I have to install two new updates. I click on it and I get the following
"Only one software management tool is allowed to run at a time. Please close the other application e.g aptitude or synaptic first"
Please note that I do not have neither aptitude nor synaptic open.
Thank you for your help.

If you have configured software properties to download updates in the background then it may be running non-interactively. Wait a while until it finishes and then try again.

I did not configure it. I've had this problem for a few hours now, still not working.

Run
sudo lsof | grep /var/lib/dpkg/lock
in a commandline terminal. That will show you the application that is locking the update db at the moment.

I get nothing. I enter my root password and get nothing.

If you try again, can you now use the update manager?
Remember only click it once, not double-click.

Still does not work.

If sudo lsof /var/lib/dpkg/lock or sudo lsof /var/lib/
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
or
sudo rm /var/lib/
and then retry.

Probably is a problem related to update-manager.
Update your system with apt or synaptic and then restart your computer. Maybe this helps.

Hello,
When I ran the terminate update command, it said Error in updating Virtualbox.
I was installing virtualbox from a .deb package yesterday and it took a lot of time so I stopped it during the installation. Could that be the cause?

Does it give you any errors when you apt-get install something?

Yes, even in synaptic. I am reinstalling the virtualbox .deb package, but just like last time, it just stays loading for ever.

Sure:
cd directory_
(ie.: cd /Desktop)
then
sudo dpkg -i complete_
(ie.: sudo dpkg -i virtualbox_

Just wanted the dpkg -i :P
Anyway, that's the outcome:
* Starting VirtualBox kernel module vboxdrv FATAL: Module vboxdrv not
found.
* Modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.
invoke-rc.d: initscript virtualbox, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing virtualbox (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
virtualbox
Is it possible to just COMPLETELY remove virtualbox, even though that it's
half installed now?

Yes, by using the --force-reinstreq option. It's not very raccomandable though:

I already know how to install packages. It's just that I can't anymore! Virtualbox ruined it.
I used the dpkg remove option once, and it still did not work. Second time i got this:
sudo dpkg -r --force-
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove virtualbox, only the config
files of which are on the system. Use --purge to remove them too.
When i want to install updates, I get the following:
Updating Resporatries:
http://
http://
http://

The following problems were found on your system:
W: GPG error: http://
What do I do?

This is not a apt, dpkg or update-manager problem anymore.
The errors above are caused by non-existent or wrong repositories in your sources.list.
The last one hasn't got the gpg authentication key.
Comment the related lines in your sources.list to correct the problem.
Best regards

I removed them.. now when I click on the update button, it loads (updates
the repositories) and then nothing happens, just goes away!
Although synaptic now works :)

Believe me that I am a little confused.
Try to reinstall update-manager:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall update-manager
There was a similar problem in the italian version in Ubuntu Edgy though.
