Can anyone help me I am totally new to this ubuntu thing, I want to give it a try, but cannot get it to work, is it possible to uninstall the ubuntu, because I tried to use fdisk and it will not do anything, to put windows back on it too.

The server version doesn't have any GUI or DE. If you want a graphical interface you have to install the Desktop version or install the ubuntu-desktop metapackage.

Launch the command ''sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop'' to do that.

Or, if you want the KDE environment,

   sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Then will it always boot to the graphic interface, that is what I want it to do, is there and LTS in the alternative version too?

Whic is better ubuntu or one of the others like kbuntu that I see here. Can i also have the server version on the same pc as the other version, like the bdesktop version? For server purposes, I want to setup a ragnarok game server!

In that case which version is better for that, the ubutu or kubuntu? Or is there a better version here!

As far as which version you want it depends on what you desire. For example, Kubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop environment. You can install Ubuntu which uses Gnome as the desktop environment, and then install KDE also if you like, you can try both out that way. And the main difference between the server and the desktop is that the server version doesn't install a desktop environment and associated programs, though you can install them later if desired. Other then that, they are pretty much the same.

I would say that you probably want to stick with the standard desktop install of Ubuntu to get started.

Will it start in the gui type mode each time I reboot, or do I have to type something in to get tht to happen, that is what I want it to do.

The graphical interface will start automatically. There is no command you'll have to launch.

If you install the ubuntu-desktop package, will the computer still act as a server or will it revert to the desktop version of ubuntu?

Thanks

Please excuse me but I'm a newbuie to Linux. One full week and loving it.

I have installed Ubuntu Server ver 7.04 and would like to set it up as a file server for now. I would like to get the GUI install so I may explore freely. "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" doesn't work for me. I get error message "e: Could not find package ubuntu" The Ubuntu Server Cd is in the CD-Rom. Can someone please guide me.

Thanks

Thats what happened to me, but I did the ubuntu-desktop command, which worked fine, except the GUI didn't load when the OS booted up.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I have the same problem - no GUI. How can I fix it? How do I get back to the shell to fix it?

i have successfully installed latest Ubuntu server . but it only comes up with command line interface.
I would like to get GUI on that server and wanna configure server roles , like Printer server, File server, DNS, DHCp, Proxy server roles.

so like u said, if i type "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" in command prompt, do i also need Desktop CD to put in the tray or not? Do i have to type that command every time to get GUI after rebooting.??

tell me clearly please???
Ubuntu makes it difficult!!!

The only difference between the server install and the desktop install is the lack of a GUI. (There are a couple other differences, but that's the main one). You can easily install install a GUI (without security risks). Just install "ubuntu-desktop", (for Gnome) "kubuntu-desktop", (for KDE) or "xubuntu-desktop" (for xfce), you can do this with aptitude.

Example:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

Run "aptitude -h" and you'll see all the options, including remove and purge. "man aptitude" will display the manual page.

in order for the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" to work, i believe you need to be connected to the internet.
