Breezy Badger (5.10) is a very old release, its dont support anymore with security fixes and extensions. Maybe they closed the official Mirror for that. Why you dont try Hardy?

It seems that you have Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger installed -- this version is obsolete and no more supported -- repositories for breezy are closed! Install the newest version of Ubuntu -- 8.04 Hardy Heron.

Have you tried the Xubuntu?

In their site (http://www.xubuntu.org/) they say "Older computers feel lively again".
