AVG Anti Virus Update

Asked by Aditya

Hi,

I have installed AVG Anti Virus Free Edition in my Ubuntu. When I want to update it, Ubuntu is telling me that "Update Process failed." And it is giving me a Reason that "I do not have permission to update."

Kindly tell me what to do.
Regards,
Aditya

Login as root and try. Did you install Avg as root or a normal user ?

Try this out http://www.howtoforge.com/avg_antivirus_ubuntu_feisty

I might add that AV software is probably not really necessary. Linux benefits from being much more secure and a lack of a large number of viruses in the wild. Many Linux users do not use any AV software. Many mac users do not either. That isn't to say that you shouldn't. Only that you don't have to in most cases. Personally, I enjoy not dealing with annoying AV products and find it one of the many benefits to using Linux.

You can't log in as root (unless you've done some very strange things). What you should do is (from konsole) type:
kdesu avg
If you're using GNOME instead of KDE, type (in the terminal):
gksu avg
from there you should be able to update. Don't use this to start avg under normal circumstances. Note that you might have to replace "avg" with the command to start avg from the command line -- I don't know much about avg on linux.

I had problems with updating and scanning all files.
I used "sudo avggui",(without quotation marks), in the terminal and it seems to work fine.

Look from applications menu for the Avg icon right click with mouse on it and select "add to panel"

Go to yuor top panel on the avg icon right click on it open "properties" and change the Command line:

from

avggui

to

gksudo avggui

Then start avg from that panel avg icon give your user password then update avg...

Hope this helps
