Setup a music server/shared directory?

Asked by george_rutkay

I've backed up my step-daughter's laptop music (a lot of music!!!) onto the Dell which runs Ubuntu 7.10 (Desktop, not Server software).

I'd like to set up her music as a network-shared folder so she can connect to it from her WinXP Home edition laptop in the house (the laptop has limited drive space, the Dell has a bigger drive).

I have Samba installed and I was able to wirelessly transfer everything over from her laptop.

But I'm getting various issues when I try to set up her Music directory for sharing.

First, I cannot share the folder at all from within her account - some error message complains that she doesn't have Sudo privileges and she should contact the administrator. True enough, I didn't give her administrative rights in her account.

So I log-in as root and try to share her music folder as root. I right-click on the folder and go through the naming, then it appears to share.

Then I right-click on the folder again and pick Sharing options. Everything is greyed-out until I check the box "Share this folder" (it's her music folder).

I check off the box, leave the share name as Music and click "Create Share". I get an error message:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: usershares are currently disabled

Why is this happening? Please explain?

Thanks!

Thanks for the question.

Does the answer for question #35093 https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/35093 solve this issue?
