create icon image files

What is the format and where do I find icon files?

I would like to create some of my own, what are the specs for icon images?

I have looked, googled, and asked, but have no answers yet.

in linux we don't really use any 'format' for icon files, you can use whatever you want. png, jpg, gif, svg.

most of them are held in /usr/share/icons/

if you want them to be resizable (and keep sharp edges instead of just getting blury) then you'll have to make the icons in svg. you can use the program inkscape to make your icons in that format
