upgrade of 7.10 to 8.04 not available in update manager

After using update manager to check for updates, it returns the message "Your system is up to date". The selection to upgrade to 8.04 does not appear.

When I do the following on a command line, this happens:
sudo do-release-upgrade
[sudo] password for bataras:
Checking for a new ubuntu release
No new release found

Next, I do the following:

more /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.22-14-generic (buildd@king) (gcc version 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelea
se) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)) #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008

I take this to mean that I'm running 7.10, but can't get an upgrade to 8.04. What am I missing here? Is there something I need to fix?

sudo update-manager --dist-upgrade

It ran for a few seconds and told me my system was up-to-date!

Perhaps it is. Is 2.6.22-14-generic the same kernel that 8.04 uses?

no, it is not. 8.04 has:
nailor@nailworks:~° uname -a
Linux nailworks 2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP Thu May 1 14:31:33 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

your system can be up to date without installing 8.04
there is an up-to-date version of 7.04
there is an up-to-date version of 7.10
there is an up-to-date version of 8.04
all at one time. if you want to upgrade from 7.04 to 8.04 start update manager in the way explained above and click the button telling you that there is a new version available.

8.04 uses 2.6.24
You can try the old way of upgrading witch involves to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and replace 'gutsy' with 'hardy'. Then update and upgrade the system.

When I ran

sudo update-manager --dist-upgrade

A dialog box came up that said:

Your system is up-to-date.
There are no upgrades available for your system.

I did much the same thing using the update manager, with the same results. Some of the "How to" instructions show update manager reporting no updates, but a dialog window with upgrade button is displayed that causes the upgrade to run. I never have seen that upgrade dialog on my machine.

Does that boil down to having to use the "old way" ? What are the risks?

hello,
before upgrade,try this:
sudo apt-get update

and then,you can upgrade to 8.04

This doesn't work, but thanks anyway. This does check and show that my existing 7.10 installation is up-to-date, but I still never see the upgrade offer in update manager.

When I run 'sudo apt-get upgrade', it tells me that an upgrade is not available.

What I'm really trying to avoid is losing existing installed software, especially vmware workstation. That's installed and working, but would take a stack of dvd's to backup and restore.

That will be my next step, but will have to wait for a few weeks since I'm traveling now.

Hello,
Go to System--->Administration--->Software Sources
and choose Download from 'main server' under "Ubuntu Software" tab.
Thick all the box under "Ubuntu Software" tab.
