Can't get connected to wireless network, Ubuntu 8.04. Install went fine on windows Vista laptop. I am a novice and tried network manager, just not sure what I am doing. Also, keeps asking for WAP or WEP which right now I don't have on my network. Helpppppp!

Asked by caddie40

I installed 8.04 from a downloaded ISO on a windows vista laptop, hp 5800. All went fine, but I am now stuck at trying to connect to the internet. I can connect wirelessly no problem in windows. I tried network manager, but as a novice with Ubuntu I am not sure what information goes where and how to circumvent WAP or WEP. Help

So you see your own wireless network in the network manager, right ?

It seems strange to me that it detect your network as protected when you say it isn't.
Are you really sure your don't have any security enabled in your network ??
(Maybe you interred the key once in windows and then forgot about it ?)
Check your wireless setting of your router...

It's of course possible that your there's something wrong with the network or specific to your wireless card. Please provide your wireless card model, it might help.

To find your wireless card model:

Open a terminal (Application > Accessories > Terminal)
type "lspci | grep Wireless" (without quote) and press enter. Copy the output here.

Can you help with this problem?
