i want to play a dvd and i get a error message that states cannot read from resorce

Asked by Sethra

I went to the NASA site:
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html

Here is what I watch instead of the live video, or any video from their site:
The playback of this movie requires a Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol source plugin which is not installed.

Is there anything I can do to make this work?

I've searched the aps and installed the MMS stuff I found, so far nothing helps.

Thanks

Hi

You need to install the w32codecs package.

First, you need to enable the restricted sources. You can do this by going to System->Administration->Software Sources, and then check the "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)" if it isn't already.

Then you can install the codecs using either Synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager) or by using the command line. To use the command line, you can open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and enter the following command. The system will ask for your password, type it in and press enter even though you won't see anything while you type your password, it is ok.

sudo apt-get install w32codecs

good luck

Thank you, thank you for answering...

I did as you instructed, already did the thing for multiverse software, the codecs package seemed to install just fine. I rebooted Firefox twice even, and it still doesn't work.

I still get the same message. I get a fraction of a second of picture of a space suited astronaut on a space walk, then nothing.

What's next? Shall we get down and dirty? I'm ready to learn how.

Hello:

Please see:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
and here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Basically you want the codecs to allow you to play differnt (non-open source or open standard) formats.

The Nasa links work fine for me with the mplayer mozilla plugin. Firstly you want to enable extra repositories on your system Please refer this link for the same

http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

After getting all the repositories enabled type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install mozilla-mplayer

To install mplayer for mozilla

Or you can use vlc player also

You can install vlc by:

Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager). In Settings -> Repositories, make sure you have a "universe" repository activated.

Search for vlc and install it. You should also install vlc-plugin-esd, mozilla-plugin-vlc (and libdvdcss2).

In that case you shoud remove mplayer for mozilla

sudo aptitude remove mozilla-mplayer

which removes mplayer

(Note: Its always recommended to use one media player while streaming videos)

and install flash plugin too

sudo apt-get flashplugin-nonfree

and the videos on NASA website are in .mov format

In my case VLC + flash works fine

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.

Bhavani Shankar, thanks. I followed your instructions and installed the Mozilla-mplayer. I will try VLM next, I have installed it on one of my other past install adventures.

Ubuntu 8.04, Firefox 3 Beta 5
I have tried cookies on/off, AddBlock on/off.

Here's what's happening:
The Astronaut flashes soundlessly for about 1 second, the bar at the bottom shows about 1 minute into whatever the video is.
Then underneath the mplayer plug-in logois the message 'Stopped'
Right-click and choose 'play'
And this series of messages flash by -
    Getting playlist...
    Playing http:www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx
    Connecting to server playlist.yahoo.com[68.180.195.144]:80...
    Stopped

I'm not sure it is an Ubuntu problem as much as a Firefox settings issue?

Vexing none-the-less. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not afraid of failed attempts or crashing.
(I do reformat and re-install and try different things every couple of weeks.)

Thanks Bhavani Shankar, that solved my problem, too

I already liked VLC Media Player on Windows

If VLC can't play it, it is FUBAR ( F*cked Up Beyond All Repair )

Following this thread I also installed VLC and it plays the streams (yay!), but somehow I have no controller (e.g. start/stop button, slider, volume control, etc). In the preferences/options of VLC everything relevant seems to be set right. Any ideas?
