The scroll bars are rulers - toggle in view menu.

The grey shading is a bug - it won't print - if you want to get rid you will need to remove the ubuntu version of openoffice and install the openoffice one. Drove me up the wall and it's the same in Gutsy, Hardy though seems to not have it.

Well, you can download the latest version from the openoffice site but it's quite harder to install then stuff from synaptic or .deb packages.
The advantages are more function as the version on the openoffice.org site is newer and also it fixes the bug you are talking about.

But if I were you I would upgrade, 7.10 and 8.04 are quite nice version.

Bert Van de Poel, thanks for the reply. On the question about upgrading, I'm a little apprehensive in doing so for fear that it might mess up my virtualbox settings and files I have saved in xp as guest. Although I am very tempted to upgrade as I type.

If you follow the normal upgrade procedure it should all go right, and if you want to be certain, just backup the .virtualbox directory (in your home folder), if you can't see it press ctrl+h
