I am not sure what you're asking. The server and and desktop versions are certainly different, e.g., the server supports multiple CPUs and has a text-only interface.

If you are asking if it is possible to install the server and make it have the U/I, and other bells and whistles that are in the desktop version, the answer is yes, but with a little work. However, running the command:

   sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
 or
   sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
or
   sudo apt-get install edubuntu-desktop
etc.

would be a good start. I always install the server version, and have created a script that installs the other programs we need.

My Edubuntu CD contains both work station and server on the one disk.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server is a "server only".
So yes my question has been answered.
