Can you check if you have read/write access to /dev/lp0?

To give you write access run sudo chmod o+w /dev/lp0

Probably you have the reinstall the printer in your graphical environment (not the whole brother thing). And then try to print again. Which frontend do you use (xfe/gnome/kde/...)?

To add the printer in qnome environment, open the system menu --> system settings --> printer

* delete the old printer (if present)
* select add new printer

make a test print

Hi, I re-read the brother driver informations. For your model, you need the package mfc-210c. Klick on this link to download it:

http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreement/agreement.cgi?dlfile=http://solutions.brother.com/Library/sol/printer/linux/rpmfiles/lpr_debian/mfc210clpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb&lang=English_lpr

Accept the license agreement and save the file to a folder.
You can install it, using a terminal session. Change to the directory where you saved the file with

cd /.../

and install it with

sudo dpkg -i mfc210clpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb

Is the printer connected via usb? - the it should work now.

And a last one: check if the lpr printing system is selected on the printing dialogue as shown on the screenshot at the bottom of this page:

OK, let's try it from the beginning.

Uninstall cupswrapper and the mfc210 driver (i.e. with synaptic).

Install the package csh with:

sudo aptitude install csh
sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/cupsys /etc/init.d/cups
sudo ln -s /var/spool/cups /var/spool/lpd

Try to install the mfc210 driver. If you get an error message, download the corresponding rpm file and convert it to an ubuntu package with

sudo alien package.rpm

Install cupswrapper.
