Music CD ejects after playing 2 minutes

This is a very strange issue, but I see that at least one other person had similar problems:

It sounds like for him it was specific to 6.06, so one thought is that you could distupgrade to 6.10. His solution was to order a new CD ROM. Would either of those solutions work for you? If not, can you report the make & model of your CD ROM? The issue may be specific to it.

I have had Ubuntu 6.06 since October 2006, and would rather keep the
remaining 2+ years of support instead of upgrading to 6.10...

The CD ROM works great in Windows as a music CD player. We just tried
it again on this Ubuntu computer booted with Win98. So instead of
replacing the CD drive, let's see if we can get it to work.

The support refers to the availability of patches and security fixes in 6.06. If you upgrade to 6.10 you will still get just under 18 months of updates. If you then in April upgrade to 7.07 (when it comes out) you will get 18 months support on that too.

If you upgrade to a newer release it doesn't mean we would stop answering technical questions, just that you dont get the same length of cover for patches/fixes.

The Long Term Support release (6.06) is really aimed at businesses who want a stable platform which isn't changing too much. For home users I'd usually advocate going with the latest (or latest -1) release of Ubuntu because it often fixes many things that are broken in the previous release.

I have a possibly related issue: The CD drive will eject at seemingly random intervals, but in my case it happens with data CDs, the kid's Win98 games left over prior to rebooting (dual boot).

System setup:
- Initially Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy, soon thereafter installed Xfce desktop (need speed).
- HP Pavillion 6545C with a 500MHz celeron, 256MB RAM, 13GB HDD (half win98, half Ubuntu).
- HP CD-Writer Plus 8000 series (same as what jerunamuck has --clue?!)

The drive will eject when it isn't being used, it seems. Thunar may be open to view the CD contents, but not always.

Floundered, thanks for the heads up on this thread.

My gut tells me this is a kernal bug but I don't have the tools or experience to track it down. Any kernal junkies out there want to hold my hand? maybe teach me a little about Linux internals along the way?

I was able to demonstrate that the behavior was version dependant. I suppose the first step is to see if the problem persists in edgy. I'll dig that drive out of the spare parts bin and try it again before and after an upgrade.....

Did you update to 6.10? did it fix the problem for your Mitsumi?

The kernel is a custom compilation based on 2.6.18.1. No source patches, just an optimization for the processor and a removal of all drivers not needed on that particular machine. (Runs great, less filling!)

I can't say for sure if it was happening on the generic 2.6.17 kernel as I didn't keep it around long enough to find out.

Yes, I am still seeing the issue.

I built the custom 2.6.18.1 very soon after the initial installation of Ubuntu to get speed and save space (thus the "runs great, less filling"). The random CD eject occurs in the custom kernel for sure.

I don't know if it occurs in the stock kernel or not since it wasn't used long enough to find out.

Is there a log file somewhere, or one that can be enabled, to record actions having to do with the cdrom?

No, I haven't upgraded to 6.10 Edgy. The Ubuntu web site "upgrade" link
didn't work, but since I'm on phone dial-up I probably couldn't get it
anyway. I guess I'll just do without music CD's.
