Live CD display problem

Asked by BillyDick

Dell Laptop Inspiron 2600, 376 MB Ram, hard drive 8.5 GB free - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition.

Insert Ubuntu Live CD, turn off/on laptop.
Get Ubuntu DOS/like screen - Pressed 'Enter'.
CD and hard drive activity for a couple of minutes, then a washed-out looking screen with vertical multi-colored lines appears.
All CD and hard drive activity stops, no mouse or keyboard available.
A random key-press results in CD activity, but the screen does not change.

Sure would like to get to see what Ubuntu looks and feels like.

Any help would be appreciated.

First, are you using the lightweight version of ubuntu (xubuntu)? Highly recommended for your specs.
Download it at http://www.xubuntu.com.
Then check if the screen still freezes.
