Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 - two applications can't play sound at the same time

Asked by Wladston Viana

Hello,

I have a Toshiba R20 tablet pc, running a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. Two applications can't play sound at the same time (for example, firefox and totem). Why is that ?

Here is the audio device I have :

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

Also, how should I report the bug ?

Are you using Pulseaudio ?

Is this really for every application ? (different application sometimes uses different way to play sound so it can be a bit tricky)

There are some know issue with pulseaudio (for exemple skype) but this sounds quite unusual to me.

I don't know if I'm using pulseaudio, I just installed Ubuntu normally on the machine.

It happens with totem, rythmbox, gaim, and firefox (the three applications that I use that produce sound)

8.04 does not come with a library to handle flash videos

type in terminal{ applications->accssories->Terminal}

sudo apt-get remove libflashsupport

have a nice day

Neo,

Did that, but Id didn't help :

wladston@escuna:~$ sudo apt-get remove libflashsupport
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libflashsupport is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

libflashsupport is for flash support and doesn't have anything to do with your problem I believe.

It certainly sounds like a bug so if you want to report it here are the guidelines: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

A workaround might be to change your audio output to Pulseaudio. It handles mixing differently so It might be worth a try.

You can change the output in "Sound Preference" / devices tab (simply choose PulseAudio Sound server for what is needed)

Thanks Neo, I had the same problem installing that flash library solved the problem.

I am curious though...how does flash relate to this problem?
