The scroll wheel in mouse or touchpad on my system does not work

I just recently installed Ubuntu and am testing it out. Using a Toshiba Satellite P105. Neither the scroll on the touchpad nor the scroll wheel on my USB mouse works

NOTE: I am running this Ubuntu Linux inside of a VMWare Virtual Machine. I do have other virtual machines using standard windows, and the scroll works fine in them, so I do not believe that the VM is interfering with this.

I'm very new to Linux, and so I don't know much about where to go to put in configurations etc, or I would.

I have looked in the preferences for the mouse, and it appears that the driver being used right now either does not have a scroll option, or else it is not detecting that there is a scroll mouse there, and so it's not presenting that option.
