.Dat files Playing

i can't play .dat files properly on my hardy heron...
its playing with harshy n rough screen n its not smooth like DVD video...
i tried too many VCD with vlc n totem but the result is same i haven't got smooth video still....
let me know plz how to play .dat files smoothly like other videos on Ubuntu...
n am having same problem in ubuntu n debian....but any other format is quiet smooth n cool...
so tell me how to play .dat files on Ubuntu.....i need it badly i cant watch any VCD...
