Nvidia Graphics resolution problem in 8.04

Hi,

I have a NVidia Quadro NVS 280 SD with AGP8X Graphics card (64MB VRAM). Recently installed 'nvidia-glx' in Ubuntu 8.04 for advanced desktop effects. But my screen resolution doesn't go above 640x480 whereas my monitor support 1024x768 at 60MHz. Please help me with this problem. Did search for similar problems but couldn't solve my problem.

This problem occurs when I enable the driver from 'Hardware Drivers'

try.. system... preferences....main menu...in left hand panel, go to other... then enable by ticking screens & graphics. then close and go to applications... other and you should see that option and have a play .. good luck

I only found this by playing with Ununtu for the last 2 months. I am switching from XP soon, well as soon as i am comfortable to leave all my basic software behind. So far so good
Kubuntu offers more tweaking options but I like the Ubuntu simplicity, I am sure that all the tweaking options are here in Ubuntu it is just a matter of finding out how to see them... This is a great pool of infoprmation as I only posted my first question about 5 min before you and had an answer within 3.... so I was glad to help even though I am a new convert to Linux. I would still have been on hold if I asked the same question to Micro..ft about their software....Cheers from Australia

This worked for me as well. Sort of...
Installed Ubuntu 8.04 yesterday on an Asrock nForce2 MB, a 3D Club nVidia MX440 videocard and a Compaq V1000 monitor.

Ubuntu uses it's standard drivers, detecting nVidia and a PnP display. Everything worked, I could select many different resolutions. No problem. Then I wanted 3D acceleration and changed to specific nVidia-created/managed drivers, but all of a sudden I couldn't select higher than 1024*768.

Using the 'screens and graphics' allowed me to change the video driver (some 3-4 possibilities) and from PnP to specific Compaq V1000. After obligated log-off I ended up with the upper left quarter of the screen, not able to log on again.

Solution: restarting the PC, selecting the 2nd line in the boot menu (the recovery mode) and after some textscreens, selecting the option that fixes the X server. It autodetected a thing or two and after that a normal login was possible, with Ubuntu nVidia drivers and a V1000 with all resolutions. Further tweaking with the 'screens and graphics' tool selected what I wanted.

Lesson learned: changing drivers may !not! be without problems, but there ARE ways to fix it, so don't give up too soon!
