New graphics card, Edgy won't run Gnome

Asked by mikehi

Was using an ATI RADEON 7000 Series graphics card, but Edgy/Gnome would only refresh the display at 60 Hz - too hard on these older eyes in very short order.

Switched to GeForce MX-200 card in attempt to get the refresh rate up to 85 Hz, but now Edgy/Gnome won't run.

This is a dual-boot machine with Windows XP on the other partition, which works fine.

How can I make Edgy find the MX-200 card and load Gnome?

Thanks kindly,

Mike

My Edgy is Ubuntu 6.10 with all upgrades. Runs on a dual-boot machine on a Windows XP peer-to-peer network with two other Windows machines. Edgy ran well (except for the substandard refresh rate) until I messed around changing display cards.

You just have to switch your display card driver.
I haven't ever used ATI, so just edit /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file and use "vesa" driver instead of your "nv" that should be installed now.

When I opened the xorg.conf file I found a statement that said I could run dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-org.

Hoping that this would reconfigure to use the new card, I ran this command and was able to get Gnome to start. Then from a terminal window I entered the command sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

From here I edited the horizontal and vertical refresh rates (toward the bottom of the file) to replace the numbers with ones I knew would work, then saved the file.

Horizontal and vertical refresh rates are now correct and I didn't have to see if I could remember vi editor commands from 25 years ago.

Thank you for the ideas, Vadim.
