How do I configure ufw

 I have had to disable ufw otherwise it blocks everything including my firefox browser connection. Is there a way to keep out the nasties yet allow normal traffic. Which ports should be used? Which ports should be blocked? Which ports are OK for bittorrents? Could someone please advise me.
