cannot boot xp sp3 with hardy

Asked by kjerryn

hi,
i downloaded xp sp3 and installed it after recently upgrading to hardy.
ubuntu boots fine with grub but later fails to mount any of the harddisk partitions.
xp on the other hand also loads up to the welcome screen with the xp boot sound but afterwards a blue screen just flashes and the system reboots.
please, does anyone know how to resolve this.

I think that your problem doesn't related to the upgrade of ubuntu. Do you have a computer with a amd processor? There is a bug within xp sp3. Here a probably helpful links: http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=3227892&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1

/etc/fstab isn't a command, it's a file. Open a gnome terminal and enter "less /etc/fstab"

The fstab seems to be ok. Your ntfs partition are mounted on startup. So please provide more informations:

-How do you mount your cdrom and the other volumes?
-Can you provide your logs? -->Log in your desktop and open a terminal. Enter the command "tail -f /var/log/messages". Then try to mount a cdrom and one of your partitions. Copy the output of tail.

Thank you for your information. Can you provide the requested information, please?
>-How do you mount your cdrom and the other volumes?
In your log doesn't appear any mount operations. Do you have loaded (for example) a dvd or an cdrom, while you're running the command "tail"? The program "tail" needs only for a few minutes to run. You can interrupt the porgram with Ctrl+C (after you have mount a volume).

Here some helpful links:

hello,
i don't mount any volume when i boot ubuntu they just appear on the screen and when a usb or cd is inserted.
the links above are very educative.
but i've already mounted the drives with help from a contributor like that and the drives become unmounted when i reboot.
this never happened until after installing xp service pack 3.

At the moment I have no idea of the reason for your problem. Can you provide the file /var/log/messages, please? This could be a a lot of lines, so perhaps you use pastebin.ca and post only the link here.

Try to open a cdrom and your volumes. Then follow these instructions. Open a terminal. Enter the command "cat /var/log/messages>message.log". You will find the file in your home directory. Open the file in a texteditor, for example gedit. You can mark the hole text and copy&paste it.
