synergy is not holding the IP address

every time I start up I have to retype the IP of the main computer. its just not holding the info.
so it's become pointless? was fine till I had to reinstall 14'04 after 16.04 just stopped 1/2 on the upgrade.

I also tried to use quick synergy
but there is no consistent instruction on how to set it up.
every page I have found say something different and not one worked.
add ip & name or name & IP or just the ip and what does one put in between the ip & name??
I've tried a space & / & - I've run out of combinations :(

I don't care what one we can get working. I just need it to work.
or is there something else that does the same thing, is Easy to set up and is free??
