Ubuntu freezes during boot - when dmesg starts probing ide0

Asked by rbooth

Hello All,

I recently installed Ubuntu and when it tries to boot up it seems to freeze up right after I see this:

ICH4: chipset revision 1
ICH4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
   ide0: BM-DMA at 0x1860-0x1867, bios settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
   ide1: BM-DMA at 0x1868-0x186f, bios settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio

I tried to install other flavors of linux (RH, FC, SUSE) and all seem to lock up in exactly the same place. I've posted to other sites with no luck and I thought I would give this one a try to see if someone is up to the challenge ;-)

Even if you don't know the answer to getting this up and going, if you saw that your machine was locking up here what would your next steps be in troubleshooting this type of a problem.

One of the things that I did was remove my CDROM drive that I'm guessing was ide1 thinking that there might be something flaky going on with the cdrom drive.

Right now I'm trying to install on an IBM Thinkpad T42. I see that several folks have gotten this to work, but on further investigation my model number appears to be somewhat unique (2374-K5U).

The version of Ubuntu that I'm installing is 6.10

This really has me pulling my hair out... Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

Thanks,

Randy

Hello,
I would try some kernel parameters. This would be my order:

1) pci=nopci
2) acpi=off
3) acpi=noirq
4) pci=noacpi

Try it and post your experiences, if possible with the messages from the kernel at boot
time.

What is the best way to pass these parameters to the kernel? I'm not sure that I'm going about it right...

What I'm doing now is going to recovery mode, typing e to edit, selecting boot and adding the parameter there. Then I type b to boot and I'm not seeing any change.

Thanks,

Hello Randy,
if you start your computer a grub screen should appear. You should see a menu with boot entries. Than you select one, by default the first one is the right, and type e. You can also use the Restore entry. You should see the entry in edit mode. Than you select the kernel entry and type e again. Your cursor should be at the end of this entry. With backspace delete all entries, but the ro parameter and if you use the Restore entry then don't touch the parameter ro and single. In this case simple add the new parameter.
Then insert the new parameter. Keep in mind, only one at once. Try the order how I suggested and try to remember what happens. In other words, if you my suggestion follows than you boot your computer four times. After every boot type at the command prompt:

dmesg > boot_"NUMBER"

Where "NUMBER" is a digit to the corresponding boot.

Hopefully you get more information on what is going on.
