System Administration processes won't open after 8.04 update

Asked by thedoorguy

After updating 7.10 with 8.04 the following Systems Administration applications will not open.

Hardware Drivers
Hardware Testing
Login Window
Software Sources
Synaptic package Manager

When any of these applications is clicked a status bar box appears that says "Starting Administrative Application" and the cursor changes to the loading icon. The box and icon show for a few seconds then disappear and nothing opens.

Help Please!

I'm running a Celeron D 2.93 GH, 512MB 400mhz Ram, 40MB HD, Nividia 4000 Video, onboard sound, cd-rom, cd-rw and a floppy.

Thanks thedoorguy aka Richard

It appears the problem is "unable to resolve host."
See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=773851 for work around and links to bug reports.

I solved by adding a line to the Host tab of my network connection Add IP Address 127.0.1.1 with Alias of the Host Name that appears on the General Tab. Delete line with same IP Address and incorrect Alias.

LOL...this thread is just me talking to myself apparently.

Richard

I am having a very similar issue (documented in question #44267).

The only issue that I am having however is with login manager. All my other administrative GUI applications work fine. Do you know of any file that links to that application specifically and controls the operation of it? I have run the solution that you did, and my host name is formatted correctly in the etc/hosts file.

any thoughts?

davidrachlin....

Sorry, don't have any other suggestions for you. Not sure what you mean by login manager. If you mean system>administration>login window you might also try accessing this by right clicking on your name or user icon in the top menu bar then select SetUp Login Screen. Beyond that, sorry, but I can't help you.
