sound problem...cant get more than one prog. to play sound

if one program is using sound, everything else stops producing sound. for ex. if im listening to music on firefox, i cant get sounds notifications from skype or any other program until i exit firefox. this is really annoying. im using alsa--i think. can somone help me or is this just how it works?

never mind...
i followed this guide--
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnableSoftwareMixing
then i went to System->Preferences->Sounds and changed everything to ALSA instead of Autodetect

Are you running Hardy Heron?

Please check if you can play Rhythmbox and Totem music, when firefox is not running. If that works, you might experience Bug #192888, which means your sound card does not support hardware mixing and you'll need either to wait for an Flash fix by adobe, or you try using nspluginwrapper like Conn suggest: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/192888/comments/39
