Nothing after 5.10 will install on HP Pavilion a822n

Asked by FewClues

I received a trio of CD's from Ubuntu and successfully installed version 5.10 on my AMD 64 desktop. However I was unsuccesfull at installing 6.06, 6.10. I have downloaded and check the MD5SUM on AMD64 6.10 AMD64 Alternate 6.10. The standard 6.10 live CD decompresses and begins to install - the goes through a long series of Segment errors. The AMD64 Alternate 6.10 begins to load, verifies Keyboard and starts the install but says it cannot find the load module.

I have the same problem tyring to install these CD's on a Ferrari 4000 AMD64 laptop.

Unless I crash something this isn't a major problem because I was able to upgrade on-line to 6.06 and am content with it. However I would like to get 6.10 on a couple of these computers.

I downloaded Kubuntu 6.10 and it installed flawlessly on the HP a822n 64bit computer. However it doesn't like the graphics on the Ferrari 4000. Maybe that's why Microsoft gave away Ferrari's - ya think?

But I am still unable to get either of the Ubuntu 64bit iso-s to run on any 64bit system.

I have converted two systems to Fiesty Fawn Herd#3 using the 32bit PC ISO and they work flawlessly - one of them is a 64bit Acer Ferrari 4000 and albeit in the failsafe mode it functions completely (with the exception that the screen resolution cannot be altered.

I just downloaded Fiesty Fawn Herd#3 AMD64 bit ISO. As has been the case all the way back to 6.10 it will not function and fails to find filespace and has pages of segmentation errors.

I am now convinced that Unubtu is unable to operate on ANY AMD Athelon 64 processor and am giving up.

I guess the question is are the applications that you want to run optimized for 64bit? I mean for most people they will never see a difference running the 32bit version on their 64bit processor, other then better hardware/driver support(w/32bit). If you are not having issues with the 32bit version, you may just want to stick with it for now.

Willamts99,

That is precisely what I am doing. I still have the 64bit system running nicely on 6.06TLS and it does the job. I just moved that box back in the system and now primarily operate from the two 32 bit machines. The Acer Ferrari 4000 (64bit) is now perking along with 7.04 32 bit on it.

I have tried to install the 6.10 64bit software on 7 different manufactured 64 bit machines without success. I am firmly convinced that the problem is in the 6.10 software and not in any one of the computers. I'm now wondering if anyone is having success with 6.10 or 7.04 64bit versions. The strange part of it is that the Kubuntu 64 bit goes right on anything. I suppose I could install Kubuntu and then using the Synaptic Package Manager install the Ubuntu software.

I'm feeling incredibly stupid at this moment! The problem was completely mine! The HP a822n has a combination DVD/CD writer as well as a CD playback.

I've been downloading the ISO, burning it in the combination slot on top - and then attempting to boot from that same drive.

It wasn't until I installed Feisty Fawn Herd#3 onto the 64bit laptop (that only has a combination drive) that I realized the problem.

I put the CD in the lower unit - CD Playback - and of course it installed perfectly and I am presently using it for this post. So if anyone else is having problems with an HP pavilion a822n try using the CD playback - it should work!

Sometimes it is the simple things that get us. Glad you got it to work though, and thank you for the reply.
